Unit: Google Sketchup

Year: 6 Strand: Graphic Design

Time: 4 Weeks

National Curriculum Objectives –

Developing ideas and making things happen
2a how to develop and refine ideas by bringing together, organising and reorganising text, tables, images and sound as appropriate

Reviewing, modifying and evaluating work as it progresses
4a review what they and others have done to help them develop their ideas

4b describe and talk about the effectiveness of their work with ICT, comparing it with other methods and considering the effect it has on others

4c talk about how they could improve future work.

You must:
Use Google Sketchup to create 3D buildings
Use Google Earth and create models that will be shared.
Discuss how 3D modelling is used and its advantages.

You Can:
Use Google Sketchup to create models for other topic areas such as DT.

Assessment Questions: (AF1)
How effective a tool is Google Sketchup?
What are the applications for this software?
How could you improve your design?
What do you think of others work?
Can you make some suggestions to improve?

Objective

Success Criteria

Teaching Activity – Key Techniques + Differentiation

Resources & Vocab

Assessment for learning Implication for planning.

1

To review key skills in 3D modelling.

SC – Children will create a 3d model of a house and populate it with objects.

Recap Google Sketchup with children in class. What is it? What is it used for? What did you do last time?

Challenge children to create a house or flat, and to populate it with objects from the 3D warehouse.

Children may need reminding of how to change the scale of an object, go to Tools and choose scale.

EXT – Children to add objects to the external of the house/street.

3D warehouse.

Help video for creating a simple house in Sketchup

Help video for how to make a more complex house in sketchup.

2

To understand where 3d models are used.

SC- To create a model in building maker and upload it to Google Earth.

Where do you find 3d models? Children to discuss. Explain that Google Sketchup can export models to other places.

Show children Google Earth – challenge children to find New York City and turn on the 3d building. Explain as needed.

Who makes these models, where are they made?

Show child Google Building Maker. Randomly find a building to build a model of. Click choose one for you. Demo how to make a basic building. You will need a Google account to save these. The children can all use one generic account. This will need to be created before hand and also the googleearth software and browser plugin e.g username: exampleschool@gmail.com password: example school.

TASK – Children to create a building that will be imported into Google earth.

Plenary- These models can be imported into Sketchup and edited further.

To create a suitably sized navigable model for integration in Google Earth

Success Criteria

Children will have a built a redesigned model of their school in Sketchup and placed it back in Google Earth

Show children a collection of images of their school buildings and discuss what improvements and developments the children would like to see if they were the architects of a new school

Tell children they will now have the opportunity to redesign the school on the existing citing site.

  • Open Google Earth and navigate to the school site

  • Zoom into the area , so that the site can be seen prominently and now open Sketchup – use the ‘Get Current View’ button to import to bring in the base of the school site

  • Demonstrate how to build on the plan view of the school, point out the height and length of the building and how this needs to remain sensible

Allow children to use the skills they have learned over the previous few weeks to build their ideal school. They could also add to the site by downloading components. Once the model has been built – children can use the export to Google Earth Button to place the model into Google Earth.

Children could take pictures of the textures of the walls and then use these to add texture to there own buildings

Alterative – Children to make the school at it is currently and then move onto designing their ideal school. Children could take pictures of the textures of the walls and then use these to add texture to there own buildings

Help Video for Working with Google Earth and Sketchup

Unit: Google Sketchup

Year: Y6 Strand:

Description:

Why teach this unit?

Children will experience 3d modelling – an application used in industry for architecture and design – see examples

This unit can be extended as there is always something new to learn with Sketchup and it lends itself greatly to competitions.

Children can download Sketchup at home and so carry on their learning there

This unit links with digital image software work and work on google earth

It has curriculum links with Geography, art, design and technology and History, e.g children could create a ‘Round House’

Techniques:
Drawing 3d models

Exporting between Sketchup and Google Earth

Process:

To create a navigable model

Concepts:

To know that modelling allows us to test out ideas quickly and effectively.

National Curriculum Statements.

2a how to develop and refine ideas by bringing together, organising and reorganising text, tables, images and sound as appropriate

4a review what they and others have done to help them develop their ideas

4b describe and talk about the effectiveness of their work with ICT, comparing

it with other methods and considering the effect it has on others [for

example, the impact made by a desktop-published newsletter or poster]

4c talk about how they could improve future work.

Outcomes

Children will be confident in creating 3D buildings in Google skecthup

They will be able to export work from sketchup into google earth.

They will be aware of how 3d modelling is used by architects to create fly-through models

They will have produced a number of models in Sketchup and be able to use this tool for work in other subjects

Previous Learning
Children will have had experience of creating 3d models in year 5. They will have created house and street views.
