SSC Year 7 Project; Shark Attack Name: _______________
Due Date:
This work should be completed in your Problem Solving and Projects book.
The Problem
Last Monday, three orphans failed to return from a fishing trip off Phillip Island. They were Maria James aged 11, Donald James aged 14 and Mark Guco aged 17. The police called the search off on Tuesday night because of storms and gale force winds.
On Wednesday morning a shark was caught off Cowes. A human arm was found in the stomach. The arm had no identifying features but the length could be measured. Police measured the length as 610 mm.
You are a forensic scientist assigned by the coroner to determine if the arm belongs to one of these three missing people, and if so, which person. You have been given statistics of arm lengths of 39 children from each age group. The report to the coroner needs to include as many aspects of statistics as you consider necessary. She has specified that manual calculations are required in the report.
Use the following data collected by measuring the arm lengths of 39 – 11 year old females, 14 year old males and 17 year old males.
Data

11 (F) 51, 45, 43, 53, 48, 48, 59, 50, 47, 51, 49, 48, 51, 47, 50, 52, 49, 50, 49, 50, 48, 51, 55,44, 45, 46, 46, 49, 50, 51, 51, 53, 54, 55, 43, 49, 48, 50, 51.
14 (M) 68, 65, 67, 70, 71, 67, 66, 71, 59, 62, 65, 62, 67, 64, 62, 60, 65, 71, 62, 67, 62, 63, 64, 65, 69, 71, 70, 60, 59, 63, 63, 70, 75, 67, 63, 71, 71, 68, 63.

The written report should include the following:
Aim:
State the problem to be solved. [2 mark]
Analysis:
Construct a frequency table for each of the sets of data. Make sure you chose appropriate class intervals.
[6 marks]
Find the mean, median and mode (showing all working out) for each age group [6 marks]
Enter the data into a spreadsheet and check your answers from your calculations for mean, median and mode [2 marks]
Explain how accurate and/or appropriate each measure is to finding who the arm belongs to. [2 marks]
Results: State the mean, median and mode for each age group. Compare this data to the length of the arm found. [3 marks]
Conclusion: Write a letter to the coroner explaining your findings. [3 marks]
Evaluation: How accurate do you believe your conclusion to be and how certain can you be of whom the arm belongs to? [2marks]
What additional advice would you give to the coroner? [2 marks]
Presentation of the report: neat and complete [2 marks]
Total = 30 marks
