Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I create my Lion Mail account?

All new students are automatically assigned an RVCC “Lion Mail” Google Apps for Education account.  The userid will be the same as your RVCC userid.  The password will be the characters "Rv" (upper case “R” lower case “v” without the quotes) plus the last four numbers of your G number.  It will look like Rv00123456

  • How do I log in to my Lion Mail account?

Your Google Apps for Education account includes email, Google Talk, Google Docs and Spreadsheets, and a Calendar service. Other services may be added in the future as they are available and appropriate.

  • Can I log on to other Google-sponsored services with my RVCC mail username and password (i.e.,

Your Google Apps for Education username and password will only work with the services that have been deployed within the RVCC domain. To access other Google services, you will need to apply for a non RVCC College account through Google.

  • Who is eligible to participate in the RVCC mail service?

Google Apps for Education accounts are available to:

  • All RVCC credited students

  • Faculty

  • Staff

Faculty and staff need to verify that forwarding email to a Google Apps for Education account is acceptable to any departmental, contract or other policies to which they must adhere.

Here's how to change your password:

  1. Sign in to Gmail.

  2. Click settinjgs at the top of any Gmail page, and open the Accounts and Import tab.

  3. Click Google Account settings.

  4. In the new window, click Change password under the Personal information option.

  5. Enter your current password and your new password.

Make sure you create a unique password to help keep someone from breaking in to your account. Here are a few tips for creating your password, and keeping it safe:

  • Never tell anyone your password.

  • Never write down your password. Even though your password will look random to others, think of a way to remember it so that you don't have to write it down.

  • Change your password periodically.

  • Don't choose a dictionary word as your password. Be creative.

  • Include punctuation marks. Mix capital and lowercase letters. Use numbers. A variety of characters makes it harder to guess a password.

If your password isn't working, you'll need to go through our password recovery process. Google Apps users, please contact your organization's IT admin for help with password recovery.

FOR ADDED SECURITY: Your Google Apps for Education password should NOT be identical to your RVCC password. This is because the Google Apps account is hosted by Google, not Raritan Valley Community College.  Password changes on Google will not change your password on the RVCC network and vice versa.

  • Can I forward my mail to my personal email system?

  • Can I access my Lion Mail account on my mobile device?
  • How do I ensure that my data stays secure when I'm using a shared or public computer?

IMPORTANT WARNING: Just closing the Web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) will not end your session and the next user will have full access to your Google Apps for Education account. Click the sign out button when you are finished using your Google Apps for Education account on a shared or public computer and then close the browser.
  • How do I report junk email or account abuse?

Use the Report Spam button to let Google know if you received junk email or a spoofed message.

Use the Report Phishing link to let Google know if you have received a phishing message. You will see a red warning message at the top of any emails that are suspected of referencing a phishing site.

If you think that your Google Apps for Education mail account has been compromised, contact Please include the header of the suspicious message and the entire message text. You should also change your password.

  • Can I retrieve my email using POP (Post Office Protocol)?

Yes. POP Access is available. A list of available email clients and associated configuration settings is also available.

When configuring POP access, be sure to enter in your full Google Apps for Education email address as the user name. For example, a user name would be hmun8354@smail.raritanval.eduedu instead of

How much space do I have for my email and documents?

Email:  7 GB of storage in your email account.      

Sites (web pages):  Raritan Valley Community College has a combined total of 100 GB for everyone.  There are no individual quotas.

Documents:  You have a combined limit of 5000 documents and presentations and 5000 images.

  • Docs: Each doc can have a maximum size of 500K, plus up to 2MB per embedded image.

  • Spreadsheets: Each can be up to 256 columns, 200,000 cells, or 100 sheets--whichever is reached first. There's no limit on rows.  

  • Presentations: Files in .ppt and .pps formats can have a maximum size of 10MB or 200 slides; files uploaded from the Web can be up to 2MB; emailed files can be up to 500K.

  • PDFs: You can store up to 10MB per PDF from your computer and 2MB from the web in your Docs list, up to 100 PDFs.

  • How can I reflect a formal name change within my Google Apps for Education account?

Students need to formally change their name through the Registrar office.

Employees will need to contact the HR department for information about changing their name.

You will also need to go to the Google Apps for Education Account Management page to change the name within your Google Apps for Education account.

NOTE: While your default account username will never change, nicknames can be added to reflect name changes.
