* Crane Conservation Germany (CCG) – Starting in the 1970s, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union, NABU) and the environmental foundation WWF Deutschland (World Wide Fund for Nature) ran their respective crane protection projects in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. In the eastern part of Germany, members of the “Work Group for the Protection of Endangered Species in the GDR” managed an intense recording of crane populations over several decades. After the unification of Germany, crane conservationists from the eastern and western parts of the country founded the working group “Kranichschutz Deutschland – Crane Conservation Germany” in 1991 with support from Lufthansa Environmental Sponsoring Programme. Its goal is to preserve secure breeding areas and undisturbed gathering and resting areas for cranes in Germany with contributions to international crane protection. An additional goal is to carry out communication activities related to crane protection. Today, the coordination and operation of numerous national and international protection and research projects are handled by the Crane Information Centre at Gross Mohrdorf.
