PORTS OF CALL

Moscow

Founded in 1147 by Prince Yuri the Long Arms as a fortress, Moscow became one of the world’s largest cities. The historical

heart of the city is Moscow Kremlin. The Tsar Bell and the Tsar Cannon are unique products of Old Russia’s foundries. Among Moscow’s

symbols are the grand Red Square, the Spassky Kremlin Tower with the famous chimes, St Basil’s cathedral with its fairytale-like domes.

Another sight of equal interest is the ensemble of the Novodevichy convent – an outstanding architectural monument of the 16th

-17th centuries. The most exquisite building of the monastery is the Smolensky cathedral (or the cathedral of Our Mother of Smolensk).
Kostroma

Kostroma was founded in 1152 by Prince Yury the Long Arms to protect the north-eastern boundaries of Russia. First mentioned

in the chronicles in 1213. The central part of the city is an architectural ensemble of the end of 18th-19th century. Seven main

streets stem from the city centre. The magnifi cent Ipatiev monastery as well as one of the biggest trading arcades in Russia has been

carefully preserved by Kostroma citizens.
Yaroslavl

The city was founded in the 11th century by Prince Yaroslav the Wise at the confl uence of the Volga and the Kotorosl rivers.

The major sights include majestic churches of the 17th century, preserved since the “Golden Age” of Yaroslavl, when most gifted Russian

architects and icon-painters worked there. The frescos in the Church of Elijah the Prophet on the city’s main square are incomparably

beautiful; now the church is a museum of Old Russian painting. The monastery of Our Saviour has been the main cultural and

spiritual centre of Yaroslavl for many centuries. On its territory one can fi nd unique monuments of the 16th -17th centuries.
Kizhi

The museum on the island of Kizhi is a perl of the Russian wooden architecture. The most valued monument is a 22-domed

Church of Our Saviour’s Transfi guration. During your visit on the island, you will retain the feeling of being in a fairytale world, such is

the power of the unusual beauty of the whole island and its churches.
Uglich

The town of Uglich whose name was fi rst mentioned in the Ipatiev chronicles in 1148, justly ranks among the most picturesque

old Russian cities. It spreads on the higher right bank of the Volga. From aboard the ship you can enjoy the exquisite view of

the Kremlin: the famous Dimitry-on-the-Blood Church, the stately fi ve-domed cathedral of Our Savior’s Transfi guration, the oldest

architectural monument of the Kremlin – the Throne Chamber (Prince Dimitry’s Chambers). Other parts of the city can also boast outstanding

architectural sights: not far from the centre the beautiful silhouette of the “Divnaya” Assumption Church in the Alekseevsky

monastery (17th cent.) will not fail to catch your eye, in the western part of the city you will fi nd the Resurrection monastery (17th

cent.), and closer to the Volga – the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist (17 cent.).
Goritsy

The pier and village of Goritsy are situated on the left bank of the Sheksna river. There is a functioning convent of Resurrection

in the southern part of the village. 7 km away from the village of Goritsy, there is a town of Kirillov which major attraction is one of the

biggest monasteries in Northern Russia – the monastery of St Cyril on the White Lake; its history is connected with the names of such

outstanding fi gures in Russian culture and history as Ivan the Terrible, Serguius Radonezhsky, Patriarch Nikon. The monastery houses

the museum of unique Russian icons of the 15th -17th centuries, rare hand-written books, church relics.

Ports of call

Svirstroy and Mandrogy – “green” stops

A “green” stop gives everyone an opportunity to spend a day ashore in various activities, as these stops are scheduled in the

most picturesque and ecologically clean places.
St Petersburg

The city founded by Peter the Great in 1703 is situated where the Neva falls into the Baltic sea. Northern Palmira, the Russian

Venice – such are the names of St Petersburg, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The capital founded on the marshes at Tsar’s

became a “window” into Europe for the “new Russia”. Since its foundation the history of the city is intertwined with the history of Russia.

St Petersburg is justly called the city-museum featuring numerous architectural and sculptural masterpieces by Tresini, Rastrelli,

Voronikhin, Rossi, Falkone.
Kazan

In August 2005 the old city of Kazan celebrated its 1000-year anniversary. Through centuries it has maintained its numerous

historical and architectural monuments. For more than four centuries the city has been surrounded by the white walls of the Kremlin.

On the Kremlin grounds, one can fi nd the Spassky tower, the Annunciation cathedral, the Suyumbeki tower, the new mosque Kul-

Sharif. Orthodox and Muslim religions peacefully coexist in this city, defi ning its image based on the mixture of Russian and Eastern

traditions.
Samara

Samara is one of the most beautiful and oldest cities in the Middle Volga region. The offi cial year of its foundation is 1586.

The city attracts travelers by its interesting architectural sights, museums and exhibition centers. One of its main attractions is the

embankment spreading along the whole waterside of the city.
Saratov

The history of Saratov started in the second half of the 16th century. It is a city with its own distinct face and eventful history.

Here Russia’s fi rst public art gallery was opened (1885), as well as the country’s fi rst stationary circus (1873) and the fi rst children theatre

(1918). Here the world fi rst cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, at that time a participant of the local airplane club, carried out his fi rst training

fl ight. For many years Saratov has been a centre of attraction for the Volga Germans (about 800 thousand people at the beginning

of the 20th century). During the Soviet times and up until 1992 Saratov remained a “closed city” because of many large enterprises that

supplied Russian military industry, producing civil and war military aircrafts and executed orders for the Soviet space programme.
Volgograd

The history of the city goes back to the 14th century where a guard of archers protected passing boats from nomads. Later

there appeared a fortress and in 1589 the settlement became the town of Tsaritsyn, named after the tributary of the Volga river – the

river Tsaritsa. Renamed Stalingrad in 1925 the city became the scene of the decisive battle in the course of the Second World War,

which led to the defeat of the Nazy troops. In 1961 the city received its third name – Volgograd and in 1967 the famous Mamayev

Mound, the place of the ending of the Stalingrad battle, saw the opening of the Memorial complex “To the Heroes of the Stalingrad

Battle”.
Rostov-on-Don

The date of its foundation is considered the year of 1749, when a custom house was opened at the confl uence of the rivers Temernik

and Don. In 1763 a fortress was built nearby, named after the Orthodox metropolitan Dimitry Rostovsky. Later the settlement

turned into a town, its intensive growth fell onto the end of the 19th century. The city’s descent to the river is marked by picturesque

terraces. The stairs leading to the Don are adjacent to the park of the lower terrace. Among architectural landmarks the citizens would

name the buildings of the State Bank, Russia’s biggest circus and the Drama theatre build in the style of constructivism and reminding

the silhouette of a tractor.
Nizhny Novgorod

The history of Nizhny Novgorod starts in 1221 when Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich founded a fortress to protect Russian

boundaries at the confl uence of the Oka and the Volga rivers. The city is rich in architectural monuments: Kremlin and Arkhanjgelsky

cathedral on its grounds, the Annunciation monastery and Pechersky monastery (both are functioning), the Nativity church, the

cathedral of Alexander Nevsky. The names of many people famous in Russia and all over the world are connected with the name of

this city. Nizhny Novgorod is often called a capital on the Volga river. The city is a large industrial, cultural and transportation centre

of the Volga region.
