SHAH ALAM, 27 August 2007 – Jotun Paints, one of the world’s leading producers and suppliers of paints, today announced that it plans to focus on its interior paint business in Malaysia and will invest heavily to ensure that it secures a leadership position in the decorative paint segment here.
“The interior paint business in Malaysia has seen strong growth in the last 5 years fuelled by positive growth in the property market as well as in terms of consumer trends moving towards the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) segment and we recognise the potential in this area,” said Mr Peder Bohlin, Regional Director for Jotun Paints in South East Asia and Managing Director of Jotun Malaysia.
“Malaysian homeowners are now willing to invest more into buying premium quality paint and at Jotun, we see this as our driving force to ensure that our products are competitive in pricing with value added benefits.
“Jotun is already the leader in the premium exterior paint business in Malaysia with Jotashield and we are confident of similar success in the interior paint segment,” Mr Bohlin explained.
The industry estimates that the overall decorative paint (interior and exterior) market size in Malaysia was over RM 850million in 2006 with Jotun capturing a 18% market share.

Since its establishment in 1984, Jotun Malaysia has been producing decorative paints, protective coatings and marine coatings in its Shah Alam factory. Jotun Malaysia is one of the key production centres for SEA with other locations in Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia. Jotun Malaysia also providesregional support for research & development, marketing, information technology and purchasing.

This year, Jotun Malaysia is expecting sales of RM200 million which is a 15% growth from last year.
Mr Bohlin who was recently recognised with the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award in the inaugural Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) 2007 held recently in Kuala Lumpur, also revealed that Jotun will be launching a new range of interior paint next month and is confident that this new flagship range, Majestic, will appeal to Malaysian homeowners’ needs. He expects the new line to take Malaysia by storm and to drive Jotun’s interior paint business.
To support its expansion programme, Jotun will continue to promote its highly successful computerised Multicolor Tinting System that was first introduced in Malaysia in 1988. The Jotun Multicolor Concept is a high technology concept that allows the customer to customise colours from more than 10,000 colours. Currently, there are over 350 Jotun Multicolor Centres throughout Malaysia.

In the SEA region, Jotun Paints has doubled its sales within the last five years, driven by both major projects and rising consumer demands. Total sales for FY2006 was almost RM1 billion with the decorative segment contributing 70% of the turnover. For the last three years, Jotun has invested in new manufacturing plants in Vietnam and Indonesia which are capable to support further growth in the respective countries.
