Ecosystem Exploration

“Living Edens: Madagascar”
We will be taking a video field trip to Madagascar, which is an island off of the east coast of Africa. In this field trip we will observe both the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) aspects of four different ecosystems. We will see many types of organisms, but most of the emphasis in this exercise will be on the lemurs of Madagascar. Madagascar has many different environments that various lemurs must adapt to so that they can survive. This exploration will allow you to demonstrate an understanding of ecosystems by evaluating the biotic vs. abiotic factor in each of the ecosystems.

  1. Prior to viewing this program, you will need to define the following:

Ecology
Ecosystem

Biotic
Abiotic
Adaptation

  1. As you view the program fill out the table attached year. You should be able to list several biotic factors in addition to the abiotic factors in each ecosystem. Pay particular attention to the adaptation the different species of lemurs have made to survive in their environment.

  2. Discuss how the abiotic factors determine the biotic factors in a certain region.

  1. At the end of the video, humans become part of the picture. How are humans a significant part of these ecosystem?
