Department of Pharmacognosy with Medical Botany was founded on July the 1-st, 2003. The first Head of the Department was Doctor of Biology, Professor Fira L. S. From 2009 the Department is headed by Doctor of Pharmacy, Professor S. M. Marchyshyn. The members of the Department are Professor Marchyshyn S. M., Assoc. Prof. Shanayda M. I., Assoc. Prof. Hrymalyuk О. I., Assoc. Prof. Kernychna I. Z., senior instructor Demydyak A. L., Assist. Prof. Berdey T. S., Assist. Prof. Dahym I. S., Lykanuk M. I., senior laboratory assiastant Koziar M. I., senior laboratory assiastant Potishnuy I. M. Disciplines taught at the Department: pharmaceutical botany, pharmacognosy with fundamentals of biochemistry of plants, from 2004 – resource studies of medicinal plants, and special course “Medicinal plants and herbal therapy”.
Teaching work at the Department
The Department constantly works on improvement of teaching methods; giving theoretical and practical knowledge to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th year students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty. 1st and 2nd year students study pharmaceutical botany, 3rd year students - pharmacognosy, 5th year students – resource studies of medicinal plants and special course “Medicinal plants and herbal therapy”. Instructors of the Department prepared and published manual on educational and field practice in medical botany, methodical instructions “Plant Anatomy”, “Plant Morphology”, “Taxonomy of medicinal plants”, “Pharmacognosy”, register for the training-field practice on medical botany, monographs “Medicinal plants of Ternopil region”, “Arnica treats”. For the foreign students working programs and methodical instructions on medical botany and pharmacognosy were published in Ukrainian, English and Russian. Lectures in all mentioned disciplines are delivered with the usage of multimedia projector.

Scientific interests of the Department staff
Pharmacognosic study of some species of medicinal plants: Viburnum opulus, Erytrigia repens, Tropaeolum majus, Lophantus anisatus L.,Hyssopus officinalis L., Dracocephalum moldavica L., Bellis perennis, Arnica montana and foliosa, Borago officinalis, Levisticum officinale, Veronica chamaedrys, genus Aster, species and genus Tilia and Potentilla.
Scientific work at the Department
Pharmacognosic research of various species of medicinal plants (macro-and microscopic analysis, phytochemical researches - determining the contents of biologically active substances and their pharmacological activity).
Instructors of the Department have defended 1 Doctoral dissertation and 4 Candidate’s dissertations. It is planned to defend 9 Candidate’s dissertations, 1 Doctoral dissertation.
From the time of Department foundation the staff has published over 200 scientific works.
In 2005 and 2008, the Department organized and held national scientific conference “Chemistry of natural compounds”, in which scientists from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Ternopil participated.
At the Department works student scientific circle under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Shanayda M. I.
The main direction of scientific researches of the Department staff – botanical and pharmacognosic study of medicinal plants, which grow in the botanical garden of TSMU “Chervona Kalyna” and on the territory of Ternopil region. Students work on a variety of scientific subjects under the supervision of the Department instructors – search information, do the necessary scientific researches, the results of which are annually published and reported at scientific conferences.
