Mrs. Bisirri’s Picks
Anderson, Jodi Lynn. Peaches. Three girls from different backgrounds are “sentenced” to work on a Georgia peach farm one summer. Fun, friendship, romance...

Barker, Clive. Abarat. Highly original science fiction about a normal teenage girl’s travels through an alternate world.

Bruchac, Joseph. Code Talker. This is the story of two Navajo Marines during WWII who work for the U.S. and use their Navajo language to send coded messages.

Carr, Dennis and Elise. Welcome to Wahoo. Spoiled rich girl Victoria is forced into hiding in the middle-of-nowhere Nebraska – chick-lit with a twist.

Coy, John. Crackback. Heavy on the football scences – a real sports book.

Dessen, Sarah. Just Listen. Dessen is one of the best writers of realistic young adult novels – friendship, love, family – you will like her writing.

Draper, Sharon M. Romiette and Julio. Teens fall in love, but are harassed by a gang that objects to their interracial relationship (a modern take on Romeo and Juliet).

Friend, Natasha. Lush. Frienship, family troubles, school – all in a well-written and realistic novel.

Friesner, Esther. Nobody’s Princess. Tale about Helen of Troy as a young girl disguising herself as a boy and going on adventures – lots of action.

Graham, Rosemary. Thou Shalt Not Dump the Skater Dude. Kelsey moves to California and begins dating popular skateboarder C.J. – is this what she really wanted…

Hautman, Pete. Godless. Would anyone join a religion that is led by a 16-year-old and worships a water tower? Jason decides to find out.

Hill, Kirkpatrick. Do Not Pass Go. Deet learns to deal with a father in prison and finds out a lot about family, friends, and himself.

Koja, Kathe. Buddha Boy. An unlikely friendship develops between popular Justin and free-spirit “Buddha Boy.”

Lupica, Mike. The Big Field. Great sports author – lots of action and good stories.

Summer Ball.

Miracle on 49th Street.

Mackey, Weezie Kerr. Throwing Like a Girl. Great sports action AND a great falling in love/fitting in story.

Meyer, Stephenie. Twilight. Just read them – I’m serious 

New Moon.

Breaking Dawn.

Morgenroth, Kate. Echo. Justin witnesses the death of his brother and spirals into a psychotic state. Dark thriller.

Murdock, Catherine Gilbert. Dairy Queen. Chick lit with a sports twist about a girl who helps train a rival school’s QB and then goes out for the team herself.

Myers, Walter Dean. Monster. Hard look at a teenager in prison and his fight against the legal system.

Myracle, Lauren. TTYL. Best friends communicate through text and instant messages during their 10th grade year.

Nix, Garth. Sabriel. Excellent sci fi/fantasy about the necromancers who navigate between our world and the Land of the Dead.

Patterson, James. Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Futuristic thriller about genetically enhanced kids with special powers. Lots of action.

Peet, Mal. Tamar: A Novel of Espionage, Passion, and Betrayal. A modern-day teen uncovers the true story of a resistance fighter during WWII through clues and coded messages.

Pena, Matt de la. Ball Don’t Lie. 17-year-old looks at basketball as his ticket out of a rough life in a bad neighborhood.

Rennison, Louise. Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging. Very funny, very British, a book that will make you smile (first in a series).

Rosoff, Meg. how i live now. Well-written story of survival – a group of teenagers learn to stick together as World War Three breaks out.

Shaw, Darren. Lord Loss. A teenage boy unwittingly takes a terrifying journey to a world populated by demons, werewolves, and the like.

Shusterman, Neal. Everlost. Teenage souls caught between life and death. Allie and Nick must learn the rules and find out if escape is possible.

Smith, Roland. Peak. Teen who likes to illegally scale skyscrapers is given the opportunity to climb Mt. Everest.

Sones, Sonya. one of those hideous books where the mother dies. Humorous book about a young girl getting to know her movie star dad and making friends in L.A.

Sonnenblick, Jordan. Notes from the Midnight Driver. Humorous story of how one bad decision can change your life in unexpected ways.

Sorrells, Walter. Fake ID: A Mystery. A mother mysteriously disappears and her daughter is determined to prove she is still alive while saving her own life.

Tharp, Tim. The Knights of the Hill Country. Exciting football story with great secondary plots about life and love.

Walden, Mark. H.I.V.E.: Higher Institute of Villainous Education. Students with special aptitudes for villainy are kidnapped and held here to learn their trade.

Wittlinger, Ellen. ZigZag. Another great young adult author – all of her books are good and I’ve never met a student who didn’t like them.
