|A Heavenly Mindset
Introduction: Perhaps you have heard the comment that someone was so heavenly minded that they were no earthly good. I seriously question the accuracy of such a statement. According to the Bible the more truly heavenly minded a person is the more earthly good they’ll be. The Bible actually tells us that our spiritual failures are most often due to our earthbound minds. Jesus said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an offence to me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men”. Paul spoke of those “who set their mind on earthly things” and said, they are enemies of the cross, their god is their belly, and their end is destruction! God has called us to be a heavenly-minded people, and that’s what we want to consider in this study.
I. Man’s natural inclination to evil. Verse 39
That man has a natural bent toward evil is both a Biblical doctrine and an observable fact of life.
a. Biblical doctrine-
Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Gen 6:5-6
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me. Ps 51:5
O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself;
It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. Jer 10:23
The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it? Jer 17:9
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these things come from within and defile a man. Mk. 7:21-23
There is none righteous, no, not one;
There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one. Rom 3:10-12
b. Observable fact-
The true problem in our world lies in the heart and mind of man. It is not a physical but an ethical problem… What terrifies us is not the explosive force of the atom bomb, but the power of the wickedness of the human heart. Albert Einstein
It is becoming more and more obvious that it is not starvation, not microbes, not cancer, but man himself who is mankind’s greatest danger. Karl Jung
What a freak, then is man! What a novelty! What a monster, what a chaos, what a contradiction, what a prodigy! Judge of all things, feeble worm of the earth, depository of truth, sink of uncertainty and error, the glory and shame of the universe. Blaise Pascal
Much that we take for granted in a ‘civilized’ society is based upon the assumption of human sin. Nearly all legislation has grown up because human beings cannot be trusted to settle their own disputes with justice and without self-interest. A promise is not enough; we need a contract. Doors are not enough; we have to lock and bolt them… Law and order are not enough; we need the police to enforce them. All this is due to man’s sin. We cannot trust each other. We need protection from one another. It is a terrible indictment of human nature. John Stott
Man’s natural inclination is to evil, but we’ve been born again and are now spiritually minded!
II. The duel nature.
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter 1:2-4
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. Gal 5:16-17
III. The Heavenly Mind. Verse 38, Blue thread in tassel.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Col 3:1-2
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things. Phil 4:8
